Entry Level 1;
Text, pictures and symbols Text, pictures and symbols. Activity about distinguishing between print, symbols and pictures in a text.
Letters of the alphabet Letters of the alphabet. Activity about recognising some letters of the alphabet by name and sound, in upper and lower case.
Reading signs Reading signs. Activities based around common signs in the environment, using graphical clues (e.g. No smoking).
Capital and lower case letters Activity about the difference between capital and lower case letters.
Following instructions Activity based on using a drinks dispenser.
Listening for information Activities based on listening to telephone messages.
Reading signs Activities based around the use of circles and triangles for command and warning signs (e.g road warning signs).
Entry Level 2;
Capital letters About the use of capital letters at the beginning of sentences, for ‘I’ and for the names of people, days of the week, months and places.
Full stops and question marks Activities based around the difference between a statement and a question, and using a question mark.
Listening to instructions Using order words in instructions to identify the sequence of actions.
Picking out information Activity about picking out key words when listening to an explanation.
Predicting meaning Activity about using context clues to predict the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Reading and recognising words on forms. Activity about reading words for personal information on forms.
Reading and spelling days, months and numbers Activity about selecting correct spelling for days, months and numbers.
Responding to questions Activity about the difference between open and closed questions.
Sequencing instructions. Activity about using order words to sequence written instructions correctly.
Speaking clearly Activity about identifying clear instructions and statements.
Using linking words. Activity about constructing compound sentences using common conjunctions.
Entry Level 3;
Asking questions. Activity about identifying whether a speaker has asked a question clearly, without any unnecessary information, politely and in a way that encourages others to contribute to a discussion.
Checking the meaning of words. Activity using the on-screen dictionary to check meanings of words in context.
Finding information. Activity about finding information in reference sources, using alphabetical order.
Picking out information. Using scanning techniques to identify particular information.
Proof reading Proof reading. Activity about checking writing for spelling errors, and correcting errors.
Recognising features of instructional texts. Activity about recognising positive and negative instruction words.
Responding to questions Activity about recognising different question types, e.g. direct/indirect, closed/open, and framing responses based on the language of the question.
Understanding words on forms Activity based on words and abbreviations commonly used in forms.
Using correct spellings Activity about prefixes and suffixes.
Using images to find information. Activity about using a keyand other graphical clues on a map to find information.

Judging how much to write Activities about the level of detail required for different purposes.
Listening carefully Activity about listening for detail in spoken information.
Planning writing. Activities and tips about planning and structuring longer pieces of writing.
Showing you are listening. Activities about developing active listening techniques, face-to-face and on the telephone.
Speaking clearly and appropriately Activities about using the correct level of formality, volume and tone when speaking in different situations.
Tenses. Activities about correct use of tenses.
Using language to suit purpose Activity about the purpose and audience for writing and how this affects the language used.
Using structure and format. Activity about using pre-set formats, including application forms
Level 2;
Identifying main points. Activity about identifying the main point of an article and choosing the best summary of a text.
Proof reading for spelling. Activities asking learners to identify incorrect spellings in texts.
Speaking in a clear and appropriate way. Activities about the use of tone, intonation, volume and emphasis when speaking.
Understanding technical vocabulary Activities relating to understanding technical words using context clues, as well as knowledge of prefixes and suffixes.
Using apostrophes. Activities about the use of an apostrophe for omission and possession (including it’s/its).
Writing to suit purpose. Activities about using formal and informal writing styles.
